It's a very cool hack, but the actual advantages for that type 
of equipment are dubious (as already mentioned in some of the
comments).

There are some advantages to 96 kHz, but ** only if you don't
use the full bandwidth (up to 48 kHz) ** it offers:

* it can simplify the implementation of some effects algorithms,
  in partular those that require interpolation between samples
  (pitch shifting, time stretching and the like),

* it can allow the use of shorter anti-aliasing filters and
  hence reduce delay, reason why most of the 'digital snakes' 
  used to replace the expensive multicore cables connecting 
  the stage to a FOH mixer operate at 96 kHz.

The rest is just myths.
