Hi,

I believe you can set up a 7:1 surround sound project and work on 8 channel 
sounds files in that. Should work as long as you are just doing simple mixing 
and are careful about what effects and plugins you apply.

But once working on non-standard multichannel configurations and using surround 
sound effects, you never know what the different channels are being interpreted 
as or where they will be mapped...
