The answer to your first question is yes, you can use almost any
speaker layout,
but is always better to surround the audience and to realize two
height levels of speakers...
The system re-calculate all the positions and movements saved in the
control software
for the new setup of speakers, in real time, from one speaker to
64... obviously you can't
surround an audience with one or two speakers :-)

is there some information on the web about 3D-EST 8.0 and 24.0?
i found some speaker layouts and marketing on the a&g website, but no
formal description. the http://3dest.isgreat.org/ site does give some
hints, but i'd like to know if it's a purely object-oriented
approach or
if you can also integrate natural recordings.
is the system agnostic to speaker layouts? how does it degrade if,
say,
a composer works for 24.0 and we have to play back in 5.0 or stereo?
