In my profile is a directory called 'storage', which then has three sub-dirs called 'default', 'permanent', 'temporary'. These dirs are full of junk like sqlite databases.
Not necessarily junk: see <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/IndexedDB_API/Browser_storage_limits_and_eviction_criteria>
What is the proper way to clear all this 'storage' so that it doesn't keep coming back?
You can experiment with Edit>Preferences>Privacy & Security>Private Data>Clear Now... to see if clearing Cache, Cookies, or Offline Website Data has any effect. There have been bugs in this area in the past. Reading some pages returned by <https://www.google.com/search?q=Mozilla+Bug+527667> doesn't give me a feeling that this area has been well designed, nor that any particular SM or FF version has got it right.
