Perhaps they put a cookie when the first time adblock was enabled ... and they maintain that cookie forever.

You should be given the option by the site to be able to continue
with the ad blocker enabled.

Yeah, well, not all sites behave as we wish they would. So the user
has to decide if the content is valuable enough to put up with the ads.
