I use SeaMonkey for reading newsgroups and not email. Prior to this I
used T-bird for years. In all that time I never lost a single post.
Now in SeaMonkey I have lost several years worth of posts in one of the
groups. I was starting and stopping SeaMonkey to try the font changes.
When I was done with that and went to a group to read messages I see
nothing between 2012 and 4 AM this morning. So far this is only in one
group.
What could have happened? Is there a way to get those posts back? I
have all the group data from when I switched to SeaMonkey a few weeks ago.
If the posts are still on the server you could get them back. Maybe you
could check that by looking on google groups. Or, create a new profile
and subscribe to the group again and see if they are there. Or, add a
new news account with the same server and subscribe to the group. (I
haven't tried that last one, but I think you can have two accounts with
the same server.). If the posts are on the server then unsubscribing to
the group and resubscribing should make them re-appear.
If the posts aren't on the server then it's a question of whether you
have been storing them locally. Did you change anything under
"synchronization and storage" in the account settings to store articles
locally? If not, then you may only have the headers.
I think it is possible to recreate indexes if they have gone wrong, but
my knowledge in that area is a little out of date.
