Totall agree. Moreover on the official downloads page (URL:
https://download.mozilla.org/?product=seamonkey-2.40&os=linux&lang=en-US) on
which there's a green box with the words "Download Now", there's no mention as
to whether the download, Linux GTK2 English (38MB), is for x86 or x86_64 arch.

The webmaster should specify clearly that the download link in the green box is
for 32-bit arch.

I downloaded the latest version 2.40, x86_64 architecture whose URL is to be
found under the sub-heading "Contributed builds (other platforms". I untarred
it and am able to launch it without problem. Thanks.

You're right. On Debian 8.3, in the home directory, there's a hidden folder
called .mozilla. When I opened it, there were two folders: firefox (for
Iceweasel) and seamonkey. Conclusion: firefox and seamonkey don't share
profiles.
