Well, sure. In a newsgroup one may have read the first post days ago.

Bolding means "unread," lack of bolding means "read." You can toggle them by pressing the letter "M" or right-clicking the message line and choosing "Mark... As Read."

As for underlining, I only see underlining when a thread containing one or more unread messages is collapsed; when I expand it, each message is either bold (unread) or plain (read) and none are underlined.

And of course with my settings (View | Threads | Threads with Unread), threads with no unread messages are not shown. They vanish as soon as I navigate away from the newsgroup, but not while I'm still there.
