Update
Exhaustive attempts to find a way to return to 'normal' window failed.
I feel a bug in a newly offered Apple 'El Capt' caused this grief.
My only option was to create a new profile after renaming the
dysfunctional original.
This involves a complete new start to mail accounts, this newsgroup,
address book, bookmarks etc..
For anyone in this position I would suggest screen shots of critical
info, mail addresses for example.
