They may have the same settings for the *incoming* server but what about the *outgoing* SMTP server settings?

That's a good place to look. I think the default setting on outgoing SMTP is set for secure transmissions. I received that message when I first set up SM, and couldn't send mail. I had to change my outgoing SMTP settings, because I don't have SSL mail service.
