Thanks for the fast reply, but I'd rather keep it on list. Are you saying there is no solution short of completely re-creating a profile ? I am not using the latest version (that would be 2.24) but 2.21, would it make a difference ?
PS: searching the newsgroup some more, I found a hint pointing out that setting mail.server.serverX.valid=true in about:config allows the account creation wizard to work correctly again.
