I have this periodically and I'm not with BellSouth. It /is/ only a
temporary problem. If I leave it for an hour or so, I can download the
mail with no further problems. I put it down to too many people trying
to access a particular server at that particular time.
There are a variety of cases where mail send fails. One that I encounter is
lack of a mail server at on-road
hot spots. Another is, Charter does not block any incoming mail. That I
consider good. But if I then try to
forward mail across the room to my wife, they will block what they consider
"inappropriate".
I have a common fix for such things. At the top of the message area of the compose
window is "From". At the
right end of that is a down arrow. I click that and select a GMail account.
GMail will apparently take
anything.

This happens here (Isle of Man)from time to time. One day it was very persistent and on contacting my ISP
their technician confessed it happens to him too. His workaround was to shutdown and reload his mail program
in extreme cases if that didn't work shutdown and restart the computer as well.
When it happens I give the program three chances to connect to the mail server if not I shutdown and restart
the mail program - that usually works for me.
