Still using Windows XP, I log every software installation and update. The log captures all changes to the Windows registry and to folders and files. So as to exclude extraneous changes, I generally disable my Internet connection before the log application captures the pre-install state of my PC; the connection remains disabled until after the log application completes its post-install report. My Internet connection remains enabled only for those updates that absolutely require further downloads. This includes updates to Windows XP and to my anti-virus application. However, I have minimized the number of such updates by locating a number of full installer files for updates, which allows me to do the updates without an Internet connection. Note that I apply this same process to Mozilla updates. I download full installer files for major updates and .mar files for minor updates. Then I do the updates with my Internet connection disabled. One consideration is that I maintain not only my own PC but also my wife's PC. Thus, I want to download once and install twice. -- David E.
