Not normally, at least I've never seen it in that context, and I've been
here since Netscape 4.7. But I haven't changed my prefs lately, so your

Thanks, his settings would be "default", hence I posted here to see if anyone had seen this. It's very odd that he'd get download manager while trying to save an attachment...

I think I only ever got it once, the first day I installed SM and I must have turned it off - never to be seen again!

Q2. Best way to turn it off completely?

Try this:

Edit | Preferences | Browser | Downloads
(o) Don't open anything
(•) Open a progress dialog
(o) Open the download manager

or

(•) Don't open anything
(o) Open a progress dialog
(o) Open the download manager

Thanks, that's the place I thought it was, so I'll tell my SM friends to turn it off.

I do understand the possible benefit of download manager for people who download dozens of files at once, but it's confusing for non technical users.
