There must be around 10 threads here covering the mail error where
special characters such as Ä, Ö, Ü, € are mangled when mails are being
read as html.
The bug first appeared with 2.16 and remained under 2.17
2.19 fixes it.
I loaded 2.19 onto my Win XP machine and looked at how html mails
render, problem solved. Now I'll wait a day or two and then update the
'important' machine.
