Yes, there is activity. But it should not be "huge", althogh I cannot give
numbers.

There is a location autodetection on startup which you may want to
deactivate for stationary computers (see location panel). This is a small
HTTP query.

Several plugins (e.g. satellites, meteor showers) update their element
lists usually on startup or in regular intervals. This is seen in the
progress bars appearing at startup in the bottom-right corner. You can
deactivate the auto-update in the respective plugin configuration dialogs,
but note that esp. satellite elements become invalid within just a few
weeks. If you are not interested in satellites, rather deactivate the
plugin.
