I've discovered another major break - at the moment, it's impossible
to register a new account. On the plus side, this will help with the
spam problem. :) Any ideas on how to fix it or diagnose the problem?

The problem with the StellarBook skin is probably explained by this
line in the MediaWiki 1.18 release notes:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Release_notes/1.18
"Pure "Skin" class based custom skins are no longer supported, all
custom skins should be put together using SkinTemplate and
BaseTemplate or QuickTemplate."
