You need to check the JVM Log for the STAX service to see if there is additional information on the problem. See section "3.1.8 Why am I having problems (such as an RC 6) submitting a request to a Java service?" in the STAF/STAX FAQ at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAFFAQ.htm#d0e1133 for more information. Sometimes, the JVM can crash due to running out of memory in which case you can increase the maximum heap size for the JVM when registering the STAX service.
