The driver ought to be able to query and get back an accurate *maximum* number
of drives that can attach (at least without a reset/reboot) since a slot in a
chassis may not have a drive in it now, but one could be put in later without a
reboot.

It sounds like the core issue is that there are devices that lie in that regard
when probed; that's not good and this patch might be the only reasonable
solution since getting manufacturers to fix that, especially for equipment
already-deployed in the field, could be very difficult or impossible
(especially if the unit doesn't have field-updatable firmware!)
