I can't speak for the mail clients you're using. But as a rule your read mail spool is usually maintained within your ~/ (home) folder. You may get more informative answers / solutions on the evolution, or thunderbird mailing list(s), assuming they have one. As I don't think this has anything to do with the FreeBSD OS.
