When using path, one proxy runs add_path before relaying to the registrar, which save()'s the registration. The path is then used for a new request to find the proper proxy. Let's say you have one edge proxy on the Internet and one on the internal network. The registrar will by saving the path added by each edge proxy know the way back to the clients on the two different networks. Using path and save() on the same server doesn't add much - you already have all the information.
