The reason it's working now on glibc-based distributions is that it's making
use of an implementation detail of current glibc that someone discovered and
decided to try to take advantage of, despite that not being a documented or
guaranteed-to-persist behavior in glibc. There's no reason to expect it won't
blow up with a glibc update someday.
