Thank you very much for your posting. During the weekend, trying different 
solutions, I ended up doing something very similar (i.e., installing 
updates in a new conda environment). I will do this going forward, as it 
will prevent me from not having at least a version of Spyder that works 
fine. 

For maintenance, one might remove older versions from time to time. Here 
are a couple of useful conda commands:

○ Use conda *info -e* to check how many environments there are
○ To remove an environment: *conda remove --name envtoremove --all*

I was not aware of the automatically generated shortcut for Windows - using 
it now (vs. launching Anaconda Powershell Prompt + activating environment + 
running spyder)
