Another workable solution for ubuntu is to install the .deb packages from
Debian sid.
python-spyderlib
http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/python-spyderlib/download
and
spyder http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/spyder/download
Worked nicely for me on both ubuntu 12.04 and 13.04.
