Our part of the world will soon be transitioning to the 2019 edition of 13R, and in some cases, an even newer one. One of the changes is that breezeways that are part of a means of egress will have to be protected. For many of these, all levels except the upper floor are constructed of exposed wood joists. Our area is subject to freezing.
[cid:[email protected]] So how are you guys/gals protecting these? Normally sidewall sprinklers are not allowed beneath obstructed construction - though 13R makes an exception for decks and balconies. I'm not comfortable assuming that can be applied to breezeways. Dry QR sidewall sprinklers? What is the max area-of-coverage/spacing? The values that NFPA 13 provides are based on a smooth flat ceiling. Dry residential sidewall sprinklers? These sprinks are listed for smooth flat ceilings. If I pick one that's listed for up to 16' apart, should I really be spacing them 16' apart under obstructed construction? Flex dry pendent sprinklers? Maximum area of protection of 130 sf? I appreciate your insight!
