You're in FL and assuming the project is too, you don't have freezing issues
here correct? If that is the case, why is there a dry standpipe system being
specified? And what edition of NFPA 14 is adopted by the jurisdictional
authority? And please clarify - you describe the construction of a hotel "at
the marina", with a dock , "...located on the side of the hotel opposite the
street." Is the hotel on the same parcel as the dock, or across a street
from the dock and is this a public street if so? And is this 8-story building
code-classified as a mid-rise or high-rise? You're providing a 1,000 gpm pump
- is that because you've got an automatic water supply for the standpipe system?

Answers will be more specific pursuant to the above, but generally, the
standard (14) is mute regarding shared systems between buildings and marinas.
Within a structure, if there are rated separations (fire walls) that separate
the shell into multiple buildings as defined by code, there are provisions in
14 for how to share a water supply and calculate the demand. Hotel/marina
sharing for the AHJ to decide, but my first reaction is a hard no as you
describe it. I have another idea that would be semi-shared, but I'm keeping
that until I get the retainer.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Dock System / Stand pipe

I have a situation I have not come across before. New construction of an 8
story hotel at the marina. Plans also call for a manual dry dock hose system.
This will require, one, maybe two hose valves. The dock is located on the side
of the hotel opposite the street. Civil plans call for an underground run from
the front of the hotel, all the way around the property, along the sea wall, to
the dock.

I have a stair well, with a stand pipe in it, about 20 ft from where the dock
hose valves would need to be.

Can I delete the manual dry hose and feed from the hotel stand pipe system? Or
even directly from the fire pump would be preferable to all the underground
work. Can I change the FDC sign on the front of the hotel to include the dock
hose valves? "Hotel & Dock FDC"

My pump is already 1000GPM. Would adding these hose valves effectively make
them part of the stand pipe system? Is there any reason in NFPA 13 or 14 that I
can't extend my stand pipe system out horizontally?
