2019 NFPA 13-27.2.4.4 requires the design area to have the 12 most hydraulically demanding sprinklers (sometimes more) when using the ESFR method. What if the physically separated space requires fewer than 12 sprinklers to cover the area (only 1000 sq ft, for instance)? If we have fewer than 12 ESFR sprinklers how is 27.2.4.4 complied with?
27.2.4.2.4 does not seem to apply as the ESFR is not a Density/area method. If the space protected by ESFR sprinklers is separated from other spaces by solid partitions, 19.2.2 suggests that the design area need not extend past those walls.
