Mike, I remember looking at the NFPA website and seeing some information on the storage of these batteries and what they said about what type of suppression would be needed. Even for storage they said that a design density similar to common storage commodities was effective. Lithium ion batteries hazard and use assessment Fire Protection Research Foundation report: "Lithium Ion Batteries Hazard and Use Assessment - Phase III"<https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Files/News-and-Research/Fire-statistics-and-reports/Hazardous-materials/RFLithiumIonBatteriesPhaseIII.ashx> (PDF) Author: R. Thomas Long Jr and Andrew Blum Date of issue: November 2016 This report is part of a multi-phase research program sponsored largely by the Foundation's Property Insurance Research Group (PIRG) to develop guidance for the protection of lithium ion batteries in storage. The first two phases of this project addressed a hazard assessment and a large scale flammability characterization, with the initial report completed in 2011 and a follow-up report completed in 2013<https://www.nfpa.org/-/media/Files/News-and-Research/Fire-statistics-and-reports/Hazardous-materials/RFLithiumIonBatteriesIIB.ashx>. The latter of these two earlier efforts provided useful information on the performance of packaged small format batteries in storage. This indicated that a practical sprinkler protection solution, similar to that used for other common stored commodities, will be effective. Thus if storage doesn't create a higher risk than other common commodities then the use or manufacture should be roughly the same as other manufacturing and you could use NFPA guidelines with an OHII system.
Take a look at these reports in NFPA and see if you find any more information. I know a lot of the individual production pieces are self contained and have protection internal to them, but we're trying to come up with a good design for the overall building shell of a battery manufacturing plant and I'm not finding a lot of great info and so far we haven't rattled any expert FPE etc guidance out of the owner. Anyone have any leads I can follow?
