§Joe,

I'm not clear on which edition of NFPA 13 is in force for you, however I would look closely at the parameters of §9.5.5.3, inclusive, and the annex material for those sections in the '19 edition, and into §10.2.7.2.1.1.

I looked into the '19 handbook, and found the following in the "blue" text below §9.5.5.3:

/Once the sprinkler discharge pattern is developed, obstructions in
the horizontal plane can prevent the//
//sprinkler discharge from reaching the protected hazard. In some
   situations, the obstruction cannot be//
//avoided, and additional sprinklers are necessary to compensate for
areas under the obstruction that would//
   //not receive adequate coverage./

Reading further, I found the following blue text below §10.2.7.2.1.2 [all emphasis is mine]:

/Large, solid continuous obstructions were previously referred to as
horizontal obstructions. These obstructions,//such as deep beams or
a large duct mounted on or very near the ceiling, significantly
affect discharge //patterns and must be located above the sprinkler
discharge pattern in accordance with 10.2.7.2.1.2./ /Smaller
continuous obstructions, _*such as pipes*_ and bottom members of
trusses, and noncontinuous //obstructions, such as the web members
of bar joists located within 18 in. (450 mm) below the sprinkler,
//should be in compliance with the requirements of 10.2.7.2.1.1./

My read on this is that if the obstruction is at least 18" below the sprinkler deflector, and is not more than 48" wide, whatever it is doesn't create an obstruction to discharge.

hope that helps,

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered. I could have sworn
NFPA addressed this but I am looking for when a group of mechanical pipes
are racked and create a wide obstruction, what the minimum gaps between
pipe to not consider it a solid obstruction? Can someone point me to the
correct section, please?
