Since the joists are more than 4" deep at the top, this would be obstructed construction. Does the roof meet the definition of sloped? It should be recognized that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA 13 Committee, and has not been processed as a formal interpretation in accordance with the NFPA Regulations Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not be considered, nor relied upon, as the official position of the the NFPA, nor any of their technical committees. Open Web Wood trusses are the overhead structure, The roof Deck above is insulated. There is going to be a suspended ACT ceiling system below. The combustible interstitial space ranges from 4' to 5' high between roof deck and finished ceiling. The floor in question is 4900 SF. Sprinklers listed for interstitial spaces can't be used. The Open web joists members are in vertical position, 2x6 top and bottom cord with 2x4 braces, vertical and angled. The 18" tall joists do not have big openings in them. (I have cuts sheets I can share with you). I would like to think I can treat them as obstructed construction. That would allow for heads installed 1"-6" below bottom of joist. Your thoughts would help. Regards, G. Tim Stone G.
