According to https://gcc.gnu.org/releases.html gcc 4.4 was released on April
2009.
According to packages.ubuntu.com precise (12.04) supports gcc 4.4.
Unless we want to compile with a RH 5 looks like 4.4 should be available.
On the other side you never know on which environment people wants to compile
stuff
but I vote to just assume gcc 4.4.
