I'm not sure if it helps narrow it down any, but I noticed if I replaced the libcairo-2.dll bundled with the unofficial 0.5.5 build with the one included from the 0.5.3 release, I'm unable to reproduce this issue, which leads me to believe the issue resides somewhere in a change in cairo.
