the driver is a kernel driver so if your kernel doesn't recognize the device, you either have to backport the driver to your current kernel or (this is the better way), install a newer kernel from *updates or *backports repository that already contains the driver. (I already forgot what kernels are available for Ubuntu and what the repository names are so YMMV.)
