Yes, the current OpenGL implementation doesn't really work in the new offscreen surfaces world. We have some patches from izik that begins to fix this, but I don't know the status of them. Anyway, I don't think the OpenGL backend is very interesting atm, its main interest would be if we supported 3d stuff, as then we could avoid mixing software (2d) and hardware (3d) rendering to avoid slowdowns.
