I did this by customising layout.html with a condition check:
{%- if pagename != "index" and pagename != "search" %}
{%- block sidebar1 %}
{%- for sidebartemplate in sidebars %}
{%- include sidebartemplate %}
{%- endfor %}
{% endblock %}
{%- endif %}
