Hi, I believe it is caused by stylesheets. What theme do you use? Alabaster (sphinx's default)? rtd_theme?
Anyway, sphinx uses .highlighted class to the highlighted words. So please replace or update your stylesheet to erase paddings or margins. Some articles would let you know how to add custom stylesheet on sphinx.
