I tested on the Sphinx 1.2b2, and it seems work.

If html_extra_path includes wrong filename, there is a warning, not error.

copying extra files... WARNING: html_extra_path entry
u'/home/shirou/tmp/sphinxtest/blah' does not exist
---------

Could you show us the "warnings" on your build log?
