I did not set bayes_file_mode. I just set, prior to sending this message,
bayes_file_mode to 0666. Now if I do an sa-learn as root:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] new]#sa-learn --spam --showdots --dir .

Learned from 698 message(s) (704 message(s) examined).
[EMAIL PROTECTED] new]# ll /usr/share/spamassassin/db/
total 22528
-rw-rw-rw- 1 vpopmail vchkpw 8851 Jan 15 07:19 bayes_journal
-rw------- 1 vpopmail vchkpw 21065728 Jan 15 07:20 bayes_seen
-rw------- 1 vpopmail vchkpw 9363456 Jan 15 07:20 bayes_toks

Not exactly what I expected but if the permissions do not change along with
the ownership I think this is fixed
