I solved my own problem after a more extensive search of the archives. The errors contained the text
'perhaps you forgot to load "Mail::SpamAssassin::PerMsgStatus"?'
Caused by apt-get not removing the older version of SA (from 'stable'- v.2.20) completely, and leaving behind some files from the old version. I cleaned up behind it, and reinstalled. All fine now.
