I am trying to get a clear understanding of the basics of Spam Assassin and what it does so that I can then figure out which options we need to use. Will someone please correct me where I am wrong?
In our scenario, we have a win2000 box running Post.Office as our mail delivery program. Basically, a new message arrives in the users in folder on the mail server. If program delivery is set up correctly, Spam Assassin will then be called to compare the headers and contents of the message with a basic set of filters and with learned ham and spam set up through Bayes. If the message scores high enough, it is tagged as spam, which means that SpamAssassin wraps the message in another "message" with the original as an attachment. The header of this new email reads as spam which the end user can filter out with Outlook. Here are some questions. Does the message ever leave the user's in folder on the mail server while SpamAssassin is running? If not, what happens to the original message (before it is re-wrapped as spam)? If so, how is it sent back to the correct mail box? Each user then has to check and delete his/her own spam folder and somehow get their spam back to the mail administrator to be added to the sa-learn. I am seeing conflicting opinions as to whether or not the spam headers added by SpamAssassin cause the spam to be learned incorrectly. Thank you for any insight. -- Kelli ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials.
