There is nothing that says you HAVE to use qmail to do the filtering.
In my case, I use mailscanner to call clamav for anti-virus stuff.  But
procmail still does the filtering of the SpamAssassin results.   To me,
it's better this way because I get more control over what is sent to
/dev/null/ and what is sent to a mailbox for perusal for false positives
(rare, but they do happen).
