I use
both, SA first (with ClamA/V), then passes it to Symantec SMTP gateway
(Running on Win2k3) then to exchange. When your talking AV, it's
always good to have a couple of different defenses. But Symantec is an A/V
scanner, not a true Bayesian/point system spam filter, yes Symantec will access
blacklists and look for phrases on a subject line, but that's it. If you
really want a true spam filter, go with SA. Putting Symantec in the mix,
increases the ability to catch viruses. I like the web interface of
Symantec, I use it for some quick reporting from time to
time.
The
Symantec didn't cost me any extra (except for the box) as it comes with the
Corporate A/V solution and licensed per-user,
Desktop/Servers/Gateways/Exchange.
Oh,
and I also run Symantec A/V on the Exchange servers, mostly to scan outgoing
messages. The SA --> A/V --> Exchange is only for inbound.
Does it sound like too much?
BTW,
we haven't had a virus in awhile...3 or so years... Before that, we only
had Symantec on the exchange, got whacked by the sheer amount of mail and
couldn't delete the virus quick enough. My thought is grab it BEFORE it
gets to exchange, exchange has enough to worry about...
