Here is the spamd README:

That should get you started.  spamd (SpamAssassin daemon) is a daemon that
runs in the background and processes requests from spamc (SpamAssassin
client).  It is more efficient to uses spamd than to fire off a new
spamassassin for every email.

The FAQ entry I linked to originally explains how to throttle spamd (use -m).
