I second pedro's motion.. sa-learn DOES accept mbox files and split them appart itself, and has done so in both 2.5x and 2.6x.. I do it all the time (I almost exclusively use sa-learn with mbox files).
You just need to use the right options because the implied default is single-message-per-file rfc822 format.
