That does not sound right. I'm using sendmail+miltrassassin+spamd
and spamd children always quit when done. In other words, when my
system is not receiving any mail there is just one sendmail daemon
the miltrassassin daemon and the parent spamd daemon.

Do the spamd children usually quit and only occasionaly get stuck
or are they always getting stuck? (IE is it an intermittent problem?)

Are you using Bayes? It it possible a locking problem?
(IE children waiting on a lock to update the database).
If so, be sure that you've got 'bayes_learn_to_journal' turned
on, it helps to reduce locking contention problems.
