You guys are re-inventing the wheel, though admittedly it's tempting to try to do this. Why not just set up MIMEDefang and an AV utility? I use ClamAV; MIMEDefang does a great job of cleaning up potentially ugly attachments in any e-mail message, and ClamAV has been rejecting those virus-besotten bogus M$ e-mails for the past couple of days.
