Hello there. I did read the FAQ:

***********************************************
4.6. I get 'Malformed UTF-8 character' errors on Red Hat 8, or using
        perl 5.8.0, with SA 2.43.

Perl 5.8 introduces a policy change to using UTF-8 character sets by
default, which broke a massive amount of existing perl code, including
SpamAssassin. SpamAssassin 2.50 will contain a fix, but in the
meantime, add this line to the script which starts spamd, or runs the
   spamassassin script:

           LANG=en_US; export LANG
***********************************************

But the same problem is present for me although I have SA 2.55. Does
it make sense? (I have RedHat9 and perl-5.8.0-88 and if I 'echo
$LANG', I get 'en_US.UTF-8').

I don't even know how to try the suggested fix because I have no
script that starts spamd or runs the spamassassin script (SA is used
from my MUA, VM, withing Emacs).

I guess I could change my LANG variable in my .bash_profile, but,
being a computer ignorant, and having never understood what this
"locale" stuff is, I am afraid of side effects...

I've also search the archives, which did not help me more than the
FAQ.

Thanks in advance for any help

Alain Cochard
