Hello everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that we were looking at a spam
appliance and wanted suggestions as to why SA is better than any
appliance. Thank you to all who responded.

We ended up ordering the Barracuda from barracudanetworks.com. It had a
30 trial and we took advantage of it.

There were a few network issues with setting it up (which were issues
with hostnames on our end) but overall it was very easy to setup.

The web based configuration is clean, but a bit confusing and there is
no documentation provided either on their corporate site or in the
configuration.

Virus definitions, rules, etc. are kept very up to date and if desired
there is an option to roll back to the previous version of definitions,
rules, etc. Once configured there is an option to download your
configuration file for easy restoration in the event something happens.

There are several other downfalls, but I'll keep my public bashing to a
minimum. If you'd like other specifics, email me off list and I'll give
you the complete scoop.

Now, on to my question. They have some incredible security on this
appliance. I'd love to know how they do it!

It's only interface is via the web and to connect to it you access port
8000. The documentation says that port 22 should be accessible but the
connection is refused. An nmap scan of the device shows that only 2
ports - 25 and 400 are open. My question is how on earth are we able to
connect to port 8000 from a web browser, but not able to see that port
8000 is open when nmap scans it? Also, they tech guy from the company
was able to connect to port 22, but how? We got a connection refused.
For ssh to be able to validate a key it has to at least allow a
connection. Does anyone have any idea how they achieve this kind of
security?

Thanks,
Kevin
