As there's not yet a decision which way to go for RPM builders and such an RC4 not yet possible, I created a tarball which includes my latest patch from bug 2388 [2] and made it available here [1]. I hope that an inofficial release which makes it possible to try out the changes without having to apply the patch manually will draw more attention and testers.
So, anybody who tried that tarball, please report back if it worked or not (including your version of ExtUtils::MakeMaker which is printed at the end of the 'perl Makefile.PL' call). To get an idea of the problems this should fix, please see [2,3,4].
