There is a bug in RH7.3's 2.4.18smp kernel, a race condition under heavy 
disk access which can lead to kernel panics with the symptoms you 
describe.  I can't find the item in Bugzilla at the moment but it has hit 
several of our customers as their system load increased.  Upgrading to 
2.4.20smp fixed it.
